Where’s Winter? Big White’s Opening Day Delayed

It appears that Big White Ski Resort will not commence its 2025-26 season until December.
The initial opening day was set for Thursday, November 27, but those plans have been hindered by insufficient winter weather conditions.
A statement from Big White indicates that the current snow accumulation is “below the threshold for safe operations.”
“Early-season snowfall has not reached the necessary levels to prepare the terrain or operate the lifts safely, and we will open as soon as conditions permit,” the statement elaborated.
“Our teams have been diligently working to ensure everything is ready, and we share your excitement for the start of another fantastic winter. Although Mother Nature has not yet provided the conditions we require, we remain hopeful.”
Despite the mountain receiving 11 cm of fresh snow overnight, approximately 50 cm more is essential to safely open the runs and begin operating the lifts.
Resources are primed and ready to spring into action as soon as the snow arrives, but the plans for opening day are still on hold until that happens.
“We are closely monitoring weather patterns,” the statement continued. “According to the current forecast, we anticipate making our next significant assessment on Monday, December 1, at the earliest, unless Mother Nature surprises us before then.”
Big White assures that crews are prepared to work at full capacity to get visitors onto the mountain once conditions improve, and they will strive to provide a 48-hour notice prior to opening.
A lack of snow also postponed opening day at Big White in 2023, as the mountain did not welcome skiers and snowboarders until December 8. In 2024, however, a robust early-season snow base enabled Big White to open six days early on November 22.
While the ski season is experiencing a slight delay, the village remains fully operational, and the Welcome to Winter Christmas Light Up event will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, November 29.
According to Big White’s statement, “it is an excellent time to visit, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and pick up your season pass before the busy season begins.”
The resort has committed to keeping the public informed with updates regarding opening day here.
